Author Ellen Carol Dubois – Suffrage: Women’s Long Battle for the Vote
Thursday, March 12, 2020 – 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm
The ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920 was the culminating act in a 75-year-long struggle to win the vote for women. Ellen DuBois will present an illustrated talk about the epic battle, and explore how a woman’s right to vote changed America and how it continues to have a growing impact on our nation’s political life.
Author Ellen Carol DuBois is Distinguished Research Professor in the History Department of UCLA. She is the author of numerous books on the history of woman suffrage in the US, among them: Feminism and Suffrage: The Emergence of an Independent Women’s Movement in America, 1848–1869; Harriot Stanton Blatch and the Winning of Woman Suffrage; and Suffrage: Women’s Long Battle for the Vote. She is the coauthor, with Lynn Dumenil, of the leading textbook in US women’s history, Through Women’s Eyes: An American History with Documents and coeditor, with Vicki Ruiz, of Unequal Sisters: In Inclusive Reader in US Women’s History.
“This is a great American story, beautifully told. Ellen DuBois enables us to appreciate the drama of the long battle for women’s suffrage and the heroism of many of its advocates, as well as the movement’s imperfections. At a time when many of our constitutional rights are under assault, this is an especially relevant piece of our national history.” — Eric Foner, author of The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution.
The League of Women Voters was founded at the time of the passage of the 19th Amendment to encourage women to vote and to protect their access to voting, a mission that the League extended to the voting rights of all citizens and has worked zealously over the years to protect. There will be a short overview at this event of the League’s mission and work, by Mary Dickson, President of the Burbank/Glendale chapter of the League of Women Voters.
Books will be available for purchase and signing.
